A High Gain Parabolic Horn Fed Dish (1200mm) and High Gain 16dBi Omni-Directional WLAN SERVER antenna <HOT 16> combination.
Local area connections from mobiles to the 16dBi omni are 5 to 16 times the normal range*.
This antenna with a dual antenna bridging access point such as the Intel 2011 enables point to point interlinking ("bridging") between amateur radio licenced nodes to over 35 km with the dish to omni...
Even further range is possible dish to dish with a combined gain of over 60dB... (Megawatt EIRP)..
The Intel 2011B has built in transmit power regulation so that this antenna equipment can be legally used in the U.K. for LICENCE EXEMPT nodes... No benefit is then possible for mobiles but using reciprocal technology, fixed stations with 60cms (2 ft) dishes can access the omni at 10 times normal range and the dish can connect to another (EIRP compliant) dish up to 30 times the normal range*.
Normal range* = Using normally supplied compliant antenna (0dBi) e.g. 100 to 300 metres at 11Mb/sec
Total cost of complete node as shown: Less than GBP £1000

Conversion of FAU to WAP11

Atlantic Telecom provided a public telephone service in Glasgow using a 2.4Ghz wireless system developed by Tadiran / InnoWave. Subscribers were provided with Fixed Access Units (FAU's) which came in two flavours, voice and 'data'. The voice model provided two standard voice lines, and the 'data' model provided one high-bandwidth voice line for V.90 modems. The FAU's were mounted to the roofs and walls of buildings, and pointed in the direction of the nearest 'base station' with line-of-sight.
Unfortunately, Atlantic went bust. A bit of guesswork suggests the electronics in the FAU's were only capable of 64k data speeds, which is not very useful for bridging LAN's. Instead, we make use of the excellent weatherproof casing, and the flat-panel antenna. Two such FAU's were obtained for experimentation, and the results were pleasing.
For our trial, we used the Linksys WAP11 Wireless Access Point. It comes with RPTNC connectors on the back panel, which seem to be almost impossible to source, so the first thing to do is remove the circuit from it's plastic case. Remember this will invalidate your warranty etc etc... The RPTNC's are connected to the transceiver on short patch leads, terminating in MMCX plugs which connect to what resembles a PCMCIA card with big ears. These patch leads can be pulled out. We cut the RPTNC connectors off these leads, and soldered the loose end directly to the antenna circuit board.

This site is dedicated to the Netgear DG834(G) switch/firewall/modem/router series and its hacking.
Although the DG834(G) seems to be a great product, the quality and stability as well as the options and functions provided by the official Netgear firmwares appear to be insufficient for a good part of its users.
Therefore, we decided to have a look into the box, trying to put enough information together to be able to correct some of those issues. As time goes by, we hope to be able to provide you with guides on how to make your own firmwares (or just use the ones we will create if you're lazy) or how to add your own expansions slots on the box for cheap.

WARNING: Don't try this unless you have some electric clue. 12v isn't going to kill you, but you may cause serious damage to your access point and other equipment. Don't blame me if something goes wrong. I'm not an eletrical engineering major, I'm just a networking guy who wanted cheap PoE modules, and decided to write about how I did it. Also there is no set standard (as of 03/19/02) as to which pairs get the positive power, and which pairs get the negative power. Measure your equipment carefully so you don't damage it.
A number of Access Point manufacturers (Lucent, Symbol) are now offering Power over Ethernet add-on's for their Access Points. A PoE module inserts DC voltage into the unused wires in a standard ethernet cable (pairs 7-8 and 4-5). The idea is to supply the AP's power and UTP ethernet connectivity requirements via a single ethernet cable. This works great in areas where you may not have power and/or ethernet easily accessible, like a roof. This also allows you to more easily place the AP closer to the antenna, thus reducing signal loss over antenna cabling. Ethernet signal travels well over CAT 5 cable; 2.4ghz signal doesn't do as well over antenna cabling. Also ethernet cabling is much cheaper than antenna (LMR-400) cabling. There are currently two types of PoE adapters: a module jack or hub-like device for multiple access points. The following hack creates a simple PoE module pair.

"........As this thing is not going to be opened frequently, I didn't concentrate much on neatness when mounting the gear inside the Pelican case. Seen here is the WAP11 circuit (top right) hanging percariousely by some double-stick tape, the switching regulator (top left) held to the wood-panel substrate by some plastic ties, the LM317T regulater for charging the battery from the panel, and to the bottom right is a PIC 16F873 to control power to the AP based on battery voltage, and to reset it peridocally in the event it locks up. UPDATE: The LM317 didn't work out good - I changed to a shunt regulator using a zener and PNP transister mounted at the panel."

airPoint XO2 is a dual-radio access point that offers all the features of the airPoint XO including Bandwidth Management, Advanced Networking and Carrier Class Features. In addition, modular control of the two radios enables many different configurations. The airPoint XO2 can be used in high performance Cell Extender configuration for deploying low cost backhaul solution. It can be used as two Access Points in a box for simultaneous use to support large number of users or it can also be used as a highly reliable Access Point with Hot Standby for redundancy. The dual-radio design eliminates/minimizes throughput loss that would typically occur in these configurations when operating with a single radio. The multimode functionality offered by airPoint XO2 is unrivalled and simplifies the deployment of Wireless Wide Area Networks.

Access Point / Bridge
The SVEC WLAP is an ATMEL based AP, essentially
(but not exactly) the same as the Linksys WAP11, DLink
900AP, SMC MC2655W and the Netgear ME102.
There are two models floating around (V2 and V3), both
essentially the same on the inside (afaik), but the V2
having RP-SMA? connectors externally, and the V3 having
"permenantly" attached diversity antennas.
The latest development release 1.3.3-pre3 of ap-utils now
fully supports the ATMEL12350, the chipset used in the
SVEC FD1811
